Students generally opt for the first category, student Visa (subclass 500).

With this visa they can:

  • Bring family members to Australia with you
  • Apply online in or outside Australia
  • Work unlimited hours in any sector
  • To obtain this visa, a student must be:

  • Hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
  • Must be 6 years or older
  • Prove you have a welfare arrangement, if you are under 18.

To obtain an Australian work visa, an employer has two options to choose from,

temporary work visa lets you come to Australia to work temporarily. There might be visa conditions on your visa that only allows specific work or work with a certain employer.

A provisional visa is also a temporary visa that provides a permanent pathway. You may be able to apply for a permanent visa related to the provisional visa.

Temporary visas are again divided into subclasses:

Temporary skill shortage Visa: This temporary visa lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they can’t find a suitably skilled Australian to fill.

Temporary Graduate Visa: A temporary visa that allows international students to live, study and work after they have finished their studies.

Skilled-recognized graduate Visa: Visa allows recent engineering graduates to live, work or study in Australia for up to 18 months. You must have completed a degree or higher qualification from a specified institution within the past 2 years and be under 31 years of age.

Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa: For skilled workers who want to live and work in regional Australia. They can bring their family members as well. If an employee is granted this visa, then they might be able to apply for a Skilled Regional (Permanent) Visa.

Business innovation and investment (Provisional) Visa: Visa allows an employee to own and manage a business in Australia, conduct business and investment activity in Australia or undertake an entrepreneurial activity in Australia.

Depending on the type of visa that meets the employees’ requirements, they can apply accordingly.

To apply for the visa the employee needs to submit an EOI (Expression of interest) on SkillSet, which is an online system to receive and process applications for skilled migration in Australia.

Once they have started their application there is an application fee to process the application.

If an employee wishes to bring their family or partner along with them then they must check if their Visa type allows subsequent entry or not. If the visa does not allow the entrant, then the employee must apply for a separate visa for family members based on their intention
